Merritt at a Glance
Merritt lies in the core of the Nicola Valley, renowned for its golden grass
hills, sturdy green pine trees and glimmering turquoise lakes. These natural
highlights have contributed to Merritt's rich ranching heritage, which is still
prosperous today. One of the area's prime tourist attractions, located just
north of Merritt, is the Douglas
Lake Cattle Ranch, which is one of the largest working cattle ranches in
North America. Other western charms of Merritt include such events as the Nicola
Valley Pro Rodeo and the Merritt
Mountain Music Festival, a major country music jamboree with impressive
performers. Chaps and ten-gallon hats aside, Merritt offers enticing outdoor
options, including incredible fly-fishing, enjoyable windsurfing and challenging
yet affordable golfing. Its easy access from the Coquihalla Highway, and its
Kamloops to the Lower
Mainland connection, has made it a thriving transportation and communication
nucleus, as well as an enjoyable respite for travelers.
